Becoming the future ancestor you want to be

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the amazing opportunities we have here in the online space, the opportunities to build, grow and scale businesses that connect us globally through the technology we now have readily available.

Since I started my first business, just over eight years ago now, I’ve learned SO much and met so many wonderful people online that I would never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise because of geography.

I know I’ve grown so much too, and learned a lot about myself over the past eight years, and that’s thanks to having the opportunity to start a business.

I’ve learned a ton about business too, of course, but even leaving that aside, the online space has opened up the personal development world to me in a big way, it opened up spirituality, and creativity, in ways that I wouldn’t have thought to access offline. I talk a lot about the noise in the online space created by content marketing, but there are so many gems too that it’s really been so worth it.

The reason that I’m bringing this to you today is because, I know for you, as for me, building your business is personal.

You probably started your business for legacy and/or lifestyle reasons, those being to create something meaningful for the world and to have a positive experience of work as part of your life - being able to do work you enjoy, have your potential to grow and earn in your own hands and take care of other parts of your life too whether that’s family or travel or simply how you experience your day to day. I found, for me, traditional employment involved too much sacrifice, even though I didn’t articulate it in that way at the time, but I suspect you understand what I mean because, even though the reasons we may feel that vary, I know that’s the story for so many of us.

As we go into this new season, therefore, I invite you to take some time to think about, not for the first time, I’m sure, but to take some time to think about and remind yourself what having the opportunity to build a business means to you.

Because that’s fuel for the business building action you want to take during the season ahead.

I’ve said before that I believe that it’s through you, and all the other heart-led, impact driven, talented, creative, soulful business owners, building their own businesses that we have an opportunity to really change the paradigm of leadership and embrace a more sustainable, equitable, planet supporting approach.

Whatever we each do, I’m an Entrepreneur Trainer, you may be a coach, an artist, a photographer, a nutritionist, a healer or in any other business. Whatever we each do, that’s the piece that’s needed to create the new whole.

I used to think, before I started my business and was exposed to the online space in a big way, What can I do? I’m not a doctor, or an aid worker, or an international policy maker. I’m not doing anything really useful,’

But my thinking couldn’t be further from that now. Thanks to the last eight years, I can see the positive ripple effect of each of us bringing what we know how to do to the table.

Equally, I do know that not everything is perfect in the online space, and for absolutely sure I know that building a business is challenging. But I also know it’s a privilege to have the opportunity so, let’s focus on that for just now.

What does having the opportunity to build, grow and scale a successful, impactful, fulfilling, profitable business mean to you?

What does it mean for you, for those around you and the wider world?

Everything you want to achieve that’s in your heart and mind at the moment, what is that going to mean for your lifestyle and your legacy?

I’ve been thinking a bit recently about being an ancestor. I’ve heard the term future ancestor used by several people and, as soon as I heard it the first time, it struck me as important. I’ve long been interested in my own ancestors but, when I heard the term future ancestor, I started to think, what sort of ancestor do I want to be?

What do I want my great granddaughter, for example, to find if she ever chooses to trace her family tree? This is a question I want to live into and see where it takes me. I feel, for me, it’s a question that will help me cultivate a mindset that really prioritises what’s important to me, helps me share more boldly, be more courageous. It’s not a coincidence, I know, that doing so will help me in my personal, heart led business too.

This is a question that my involvement in the online business space has led me to want to answer and I believe it’s through building my business that I can create and demonstrate whatever that answer is, and evolves to become.

I am so excited too about what you are bringing to this space, the world and this conversation so please do get in touch - I’m @elleturner_writer on Instagram.
