How to grow a business in 2023

January 24, 20237 min read

Have you been goal setting for your business? If so, let’s talk for a minute to make sure that, right out of the gate, you stand the best chance of achieving them (and achieving them with confidence).

It’s valuable to set tangible goals for your business

You know the kind:

Sign two clients a month, or sell 50 books

Increase the number of your email subscribers or social media followers by a certain amount

Bring in a certain amount of revenue a month, a quarter or this year or

Achieve a higher percentage of your revenue as profit

These are just examples but they’re decent enough goals AND they’re tangible, easy to understand, break down and measure

The part we often miss, however, when goal setting, the part that leaves them on the back burner, lurking in a notebook only to be forgotten until next December, is that we don’t ask ourselves:

How do I feel about taking the action I need to take to achieve my goals and and

How am I going to manage any areas I feel sticky about?

You know that rush of new year enthusiasm when everyone’s talking about goal setting and the year ahead is a blank canvas of possibilities? I certainly do, it feels exciting.

But I’ve also experienced, come the time to take action, that rush of enthusiasm plummet and be replaced by feelings of

Self-doubt (Is my book really good enough?)

Procrastination (Maybe I should create a new freebie so that I can grow my list)

Fear (I am going to have to put myself out there a lot to make that sort of money. Maybe I should half that goal for now)

And the thing about these feelings is that they not only lead to delay, indecision and internal turmoil, they also use up your energy in ways that are not serving you or your business.

You started your business for a reason. Maybe you wanted to experience time freedom and have autonomy over your schedule. Maybe you wanted to achieve financial freedom to be able to provide for your family and future through only doing work that you love. Maybe you want to be able to work from anywhere in the world (that certainly feels appealing today looking out on my frozen tundra of a garden!).

Or maybe you want all three because you don’t want to have to choose.

My point is, you didn’t start your business to feel doubt, indecision and then demoralised by lack of results (Familiar? Yes, to me too 🙋‍♀️)

You want to get what you want from your business for your life, be the business owner you want to be and have the impact you want to have.

How?

By recognising the importance of, and taking action on, Building the Business Owner to Build the Business.

That’s my approach in a nutshell, one I learned the hard way but now, after more than six years in the online space, I want to use my skills and experience in leadership and personal development to save you the time and hassle.

Look back over the goals you’ve set for 2023

How do you feel about taking the action you need to take to achieve your goals and

How are you going to manage any areas you feel sticky about? (By the way, there’s nothing wrong with having areas you feel sticky about. If anything, it’s a great sign that you’re open to growth both for you and your business)

The first step is to be prepared to get to know yourself and to be honest with yourself both about:

What you want from your business for your life

What the options are to help you achieve that AND

How do you feel about the action you need to take

When I say how you feel about the action you need to take I don’t mean whether or not you feel you can be bothered in the moment or not. I mean, for example:

👉Does the action you need to take align with your values (or do you think you have to do something you just don’t want to do, but see it as the only way to achieve your tangible goals eg cold DMs 🤢)

👉Are you being decisive and discerning about the action you’re going to take (or do you find yourself constantly looking around you in the online space for someone who has the answer. Perhaps you look to see what someone you admire is doing and think that must be the way, or you sign up for all the free stuff feeling sure there will be a nugget of wisdom that will unlock everything for you. No shame, I think we’ve all been there  🙋‍♀️)

👉Are you looking at areas that feel sticky to you without self-judgement or are you treating it as an inadequacy because you think it’s something you should be able to do?

These are just examples, but they’re all ways in which we can personally derail our progress towards our business goals.

And it comes from overlooking the need to build the business owner to build the business.

If you resonate with the Build the Business Owner to Build the Business philosophy, I hope you’ll consider joining me in my hybrid programme (called Build the Business Owner!) and I’ll leave a link to more information below.
